From 2026, Moldova to issue new types of passports in line with highest international security standards
From 2026, Moldovan authorities will issue modern passports and travel documents aligned with the highest international security standards. A draft law in this regard was examined today by members of the parliamentary committee on national security, defense and public order.
The new documents will comply with the technical requirements set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and European Union regulations, featuring advanced biometric elements, unified identification codes, and enhanced personal data protection measures.
Notable updates include the inclusion of facial images, fingerprints, and holographic signatures (from the age of 14).
To facilitate international recognition, some information in the documents will be presented in Romanian, English and French.
Passports will have varying validity periods based on the holder's age and status. Thus, for stateless persons, refugees, and beneficiaries of humanitarian protection, documents will be valid between 3 and 10 years, and in cases where fingerprints cannot be temporarily taken, validity will be limited to one year.
The Public Services Agency will be responsible for issuing most identity documents, except for diplomatic and service passports, which will be issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
