Moldova marks Flag Day on 27 April; spokesman for government says Moldovans united by the same Tricolor, no matter where they are

The Republic of Moldova marks 35 years since the adoption of the Tricolor—symbol of its sovereignty, independence and national identity. On this occasion, the government's spokesperson, Daniel Voda, urged citizens to honor this important symbol of the country.

Daniel Voda emphasized that the Tricolor is not just a color; it is the country’s history, present and its path to the future.

‘’Today, for younger generations, the flag is a normality, but for past generations, it was a struggle, a choice and an act of courage. Therefore, it is good to remember and talk about our flag. Never forget how much the freedom to have our own symbol means and how important it is to honor it—not just on Flag Day, but every day,’’ said Daniel Voda.

The government's spokesperson noted that returning to the Tricolor flag was a heartfelt decision, part of the national revival that began with the return to the Romanian language and Latin script on August 31, 1989.

‘’The colors of the Tricolor—blue, yellow and red—each tell a story. Blue means clear sky, freedom and faith. Yellow symbolizes wheat, prosperity and well-being. Red represents the blood shed for freedom, our courage and solidarity. During the Soviet era, the Tricolor was banned and replaced by the communist flag. Today, the colors of our flag show the unity between past, present and future,’’ noted Daniel Voda.

Moldova marks the 35th anniversary of the Tricolor’s adoption on 27 April. Annually, on Flag Day, an official ceremony takes place outside the government building, with an honor guard and the presidential orchestra.

‘’This year too, we honor together the symbol that brings us together. The solemn ceremony can be watched also online on the government's webpage starting from 8:00. On April 27, we proudly fly the flag that defines us—at home, on social media, or wherever we go! The Tricolor reminds us of who we are and how far we can go together. It is a living story of our courage, freedom and unity. Wherever we are—in the Diaspora or any region of Moldova, be it north, south, east, or west—we are united by the same Tricolor. On Flag Day, we honor our shared history, dignity and hope for the future,’’ stated Daniel Voda.

The Flag Day is annually marked on April 27, in memory of the historic day in 1990, when the first democratically elected Parliament voted the Tricolor as the State Flag.
