Holocaust victims commemorated in Chișinău

On January 27 we commemorate the victims of the Holocaust – a tragedy whose memory still fills us with horror today. Six million Jews were killed solely because they were Jews, together with Roma, people with disabilities, and other individuals murdered simply because they were considered different. Head of state Maia Sandu conveyed the message in the context of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

“A tragedy that began with hatred, with exclusion, and with complicit silence in the face of suffering,” the President stated.

The head of state noted that in 2026 it will be 85 years since the beginning of the Holocaust on the territory of our country.

“We do not have the right to forget that terrible crimes were committed here as well, that people were deported, humiliated, shot, or left to die of hunger and cold here too,” Maia Sandu underlined.

The President mentioned that today she will participate in Strasbourg in the ceremony dedicated to the remembrance of the Holocaust victims, organized by the Council of Europe.

“But simple commemoration is not enough. ‘Never again’ is a daily responsibility for each of us – through rejecting hatred, defending human dignity, and having the courage to raise our voices against injustice,” Maia Sandu concluded.

The International Holocaust Remembrance Day is marked annually on January 27 and represents the first universal commemoration initiative dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust. This day was established by the Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, adopted on November 1, 2005.

Holocaust led to the extermination of approximately six million European Jews, as well as millions of people of other nationalities and groups persecuted by the German Nazi regime. The commemoration of the victims serves to keep the memory of the tragedy alive, to honor the suffering of those who lost their lives, and to remind us of the importance of combating hatred, antisemitism, and discrimination so that such crimes never happen again.
