New contingent of Moldovan firefighters departs for Greece on forest fire-fighting mission
A new contingent of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) today departed for the Hellenic Republic, in order to ensure the rotation of personnel involved in the pre-positioning mission aimed at combating forest fires, carried out under the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
The contingent is made up of 24 firefighters, who will replace the first IGSU group deployed in Greece between July 14 and 1 August 1, 2026. At the departure ceremony, the institution’s leadership wished the firefighters success and urged them to carry out their mission with professionalism, dedication and under conditions of maximum safety.
According to IGSU, the rotation of personnel will take place immediately after the team’s arrival in Greece, in order to ensure continuity of monitoring, preventive patrolling and intervention activities for forest fires in the areas designated by the Greek authorities.
During the mission, the first IGSU contingent took part in extinguishing three forest and vegetation fires, providing support to the Greek authorities in managing emergency situations caused by forest fires.
The pre-positioning programme of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism aims to reduce response time in the event of vegetation and forest fires, by conducting monitoring, patrolling and rapid intervention missions, as well as by strengthening cooperation and interoperability between intervention teams from participating states.
In 2026, the specialized ground forest fire-fighting team of IGSU is participating for the fourth time in support missions carried out in Greece and for the third time as a full member of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
