VIDEO // Moldovan firefighters, part of joint efforts to extinguish vegetation fires across Europe
Moldovan firefighters are contributing, for the fourth consecutive year, to fire-extinguishing operations in Greece, as part of the European Civil Protection Mechanism. President Maia Sandu has sent a message of support and solidarity, noting that this is what the European Union means: countries that help each other and people who stand by one another in good times, but especially in difficult times.
The head of state underlined that the devastating effects of climate change are visible across the European continent, manifesting themselves through large-scale vegetation fires that endanger people’s lives and property and affect entire communities.
Under these conditions, the Moldovan president stressed the solidarity between people and authorities, emphasizing that Moldova is contributing to this common effort. “We see impressive solidarity. Firefighters and rescuers from more European states are fighting the flames together – in France, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Italy and other affected areas. Moldova is contributing to this joint effort. For the fourth consecutive year, our firefighters are in Greece, as part of the European Civil Protection Mechanism. On Sunday evening they intervened again: together with their Greek colleagues, they extinguished a vegetation fire near Thessaloniki, before the flames reached people’s homes. This is what the European Union means: countries that help each other and people who stand by one another. In good times, but especially in difficult times,” Maia Sandu said.
Firefighters of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations during July 14-August 1, 2026, are taking part in the Pre-Positioning mission in Greece, organized under the auspices of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, which aims to strengthen the capacity to respond to forest fires.
