Discover Moldova with #MOLDPRES // Sweet business in Prut Meadow
In the Prut Meadow, an apiary draws attention through its unusual way of being organized and through the products it offers, from fruit honey to natural remedies and energy-boosting products. Sergiu Chetroi, a beekeeper known by the locals as “the doctor”, has transformed the family business into a space where tradition intertwines with innovation, and each jar of honey tells a story about work, patience and nature.
A fourth-generation beekeeper, Sergiu Chetroi, says he grew up among beehives and learned the craft from his grandfather and father. Today, he continues their work, but in his own way, more diversified and more focused on natural products.
“I am a fourth-generation beekeeper; I grew up among beehives; I played with bees when I was little. My great-grandfather used to make wooden beehives, the way they were once made. Now, we also want to create a small family museum, with old objects and memories from that period,” says Sergiu Chetroi.
In his apiary, there are about 250 bee colonies, and there are plans for expansion. Beyond regular honey, many other products are made here: honey with walnuts and apricots, blends with pollen and sea buckthorn, cough syrups, propolis tincture, natural energy boosters, apilarnil, as well as candles made from natural wax.
One thing that makes him different from other beekeepers is the way he cares for the bees. He says he does not use sugar in their feed, but only natural products.“For more years now, our bees haven’t seen sugar. We give them mixtures of grapefruit, lemons and herbal teas, which we change every week. This way we get products that are as natural as possible and we have healthier bees,” the beekeeper says.
Sergiu Chetroi also talks about the work carried out by the bees that goes into each drop of honey.
“For one kilogram of honey, thousands of bees fly tens of thousands of kilometers and visit millions of flowers. One bee lives only 40 days in summer and during this time. it gathers one teaspoon of honey. It may seem little, but for it, that is an entire life of work,” he says.
Another element that makes this apiary special is the fact that the beehives are built from reed. This natural material helps maintain a good temperature inside and protects the bees.“In summer they keep cool, in winter they retain warmth. They don’t create moisture and they help the bees’ health. They can also be placed directly in the sun without any problems,” the beekeeper explains.
In the Prut Meadow, the work of Sergiu Chetroi shows how a family business can become an example of care for nature and of products made with patience and attention.
