Energy Minister at SolarPower Europe Summit: Solar and storage systems are now instruments of sovereignty, resilience and secure access to energy

Renewable energy already covers approximately 24.5% of the Republic of Moldova’s final electricity consumption, and solar power together with storage systems have become instruments of sovereignty, resilience and secure access to energy. Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu made the statements today. He participated in SolarPower Europe Summit, one of the most important European events dedicated to the energy transition and the development of the renewable energy sector.

During the panel dedicated to energy security and the role of renewable energy in strengthening the resilience of European states, Junghietu presented the rapid developments of the Republic of Moldova in the field of renewable energy and energy storage, emphasizing that the energy transition has become for the Republic of Moldova not only a climate objective, but also a strategic and security necessity.

The Minister highlighted that in April 2026 the Republic of Moldova exceeded the historic threshold of 1 GW of installed capacity from renewable sources, reaching 1,023 MW, of which photovoltaic energy accounts for almost 73% of the country’s renewable mix. At the same time, renewable energy already covers approximately 24.5% of final electricity consumption.

“Solar and storage systems are now instruments of sovereignty, resilience and secure access to energy. The Republic of Moldova has demonstrated that even a small country, under geopolitical pressure and facing energy vulnerabilities, can rapidly transform its energy system when there is political will, partnerships and clear policies,” said Junghietu.

The official stressed that the accelerated development of renewable energy was made possible by the reforms implemented, alignment with European standards and competitive support mechanisms for investments. In this context, the Minister mentioned the success of the first competitive tenders for renewable projects, as well as the strong interest of investors in the second round of tenders, which attracted 16 bids for 423 MW of wind capacity and 325 MWh of storage.

The Summit brought together European and international leaders from the energy sector and was opened by President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. During the meeting, Junghietu took part in discussions alongside European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen, European Commissioner for Climate, Net-Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoekstra, as well as International Energy Agency's Director of Sustainability, Technology and Outlooks Laura Cozzi.
