Iași–Ungheni railway line to be rehabilitated and electrified
The state-owned enterprise “Moldovan Railways” (CFM) announces the procurement of design and construction services for the rehabilitation of the Iași (Romania)–Ungheni (Republic of Moldova) railway line. The project includes a comprehensive set of works to modernize and electrify the railway infrastructure, which is expected to help strengthen the railway connection between the two countries.
The planned works include the reconstruction and modernization of the railway bridge over the Prut River, as well as the modernization of the railway infrastructure at Ungheni station and the European-gauge passenger rolling stock facilities with a track gauge of 1,435 mm.
The electrification of the railway line between the bridge over the Prut and the European-gauge passenger rolling stock facilities at Ungheni station is also planned. The project further includes the modernization of signaling, interlocking and blocking systems, as well as railway communications and telecommunications. Existing utility networks in the implementation area will be protected or, where necessary, reconfigured.
According to CFM, the implementation of the project will contribute to increasing the safety and reliability of cross-border railway infrastructure and to further integrating the railway network of the Republic of Moldova into the European transport area.
The rehabilitation of the Iași–Ungheni connection is one of the directions for modernizing the national railway infrastructure and strengthening transport links with Romania and, consequently, with the European transport network.
