5+2 format no longer works
The 5+2 format is no longer functional under the current circumstances, while direct dialogue in the 1+1 format remains the channel of communication between Chisinau and Tiraspol, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri told an interview given exclusively to MOLDPRES.
According to the official, the fact that the 5+2 format is no longer functioning does not mean that the process of settling the Transnistrian conflict should be suspended. Chisinau intends to use the tools currently available to achieve concrete results for citizens.
“At this moment, the functional channel for direct communication with Tiraspol is the 1+1 format,” Chiveri said.
He noted that this mechanism cannot replace an international settlement mechanism, but it allows concrete issues to be discussed with representatives of the Transnistrian region.
The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that, alongside dialogue, the authorities must prepare the reintegration process, which involves not only legislative and institutional matters, but also measures in the areas of the economy, education, public services and infrastructure.
Valeriu Chiveri said that the Republic of Moldova has expressed its willingness to organize a new meeting in the 1+1 format and hopes that, in the coming period, the necessary conditions will be created for it to take place within a predictable timeframe.
“The dialogue is complicated. We must not hide this,” the official said, noting that there are significant differences in position between Chisinau and Tiraspol.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the dialogue agenda should be pragmatic and address issues such as freedom of movement, human rights, education, economic matters and mechanisms that can contribute to bringing the two banks of the Dniester closer together.
The official also said that the Republic of Moldova should not wait for a final political settlement to address citizens’ concrete problems.
“Reintegration has already begun, gradually, through the things that bring people closer together and improve their daily lives,” Valeriu Chiveri said.
