Moldova, Ukraine continue negotiations on water discharge from Novodnistrovsk reservoir
Representatives of Moldova and Ukraine have held a new round of discussions within the Dniester Commission on the water release regime from the Novodnistrovsk reservoir. The sides agreed to continue the dialogue on the coming days, in order to identify a balanced and mutually acceptable solution.
During the consultations, the Ukrainian side initially proposed that the volume of water released toward Moldova should be equivalent to the amount flowing into the Novodnistrovsk reservoir, namely an average flow rate of approximately 22 m³/s.
The Moldovan side did not accept the proposal, as it would involve an excessively sharp reduction in the downstream flow, given that it is currently maintained at approximately 60 m³/s.
As the matter requires further consultations, the parties agreed to continue discussions on the days to come, in order identify a solution that takes into account the needs of both states and ensures a balanced hydrological regime for the Dniester River. The Environment Ministry, together with the responsible institutions, continues to monitor the situation and is taking measures to prevent a sudden decrease in the downstream water flow. Such a reduction could affect the population's water supply, the working of aquatic ecosystems and the hydrological balance of the Dniester River.
The flow rate of 60 m³/s was established following a compromise reached by Moldova and Ukraine in late last August, when the parties decided to temporarily reduce water releases from 75 to 60 m³/s, amid declining water levels in the reservoir. The hydrological situation in the Dniester basin has deteriorated in recent weeks. During September 1-13, the average inflow into the Novodnistrovsk reservoir was approximately 22.7 m³/s, while the outflow was maintained at 60 m³/s. During this period, the water level in the reservoir fell by approximately 45 centimeters.
