New Moldovan finance minister says balance must be found between budget needs and economic development
We must find the balance between the needs of the budget and economic development, and also try to identify financial sources for all investments we want, especially the modernization of roads, hospitals and schools. New Finance Minister Victoria Belous has made statements to this effect, who presented the priorities of her mandate after taking the oath of office.
Victoria Belous said that she had ruled to give up her mandate as MP, in order to return to the leadership of the Finance Ministry and fully engage in the implementation of reforms.
“I decided to return, so that I can be fully involved in implementing reforms and, secondly, to try to identify financial sources for all investments we want, especially for roads, fully renovated hospitals, more model schools and to find the balance between the needs of the budget and economic development,” said the finance minister.
At the same time, the official said that the authorities are to present the new concept of fiscal policy, which was amended following public consultations.
“We will come forward with the fiscal policy; we will present the amended version after the consultations that took place. Of course, it is demotivating to tax more the people who work and to tax less certain vices or other sources that have benefited from reliefs until now. We will review some of the reliefs. We will once again weigh certain tax rates that are lower than the standard rate, for example the 12-per cent income tax,” the minister emphasized.
Victoria Belous returns as Minister of Finance, giving up her seat as a lawmaker and her position as head of the parliamentary commission for economy, budget and finance. She previously headed the Finance Ministry in the Recean government as of July 2024 till November 2025. Victoria Belous holds a bachelor’s degree in law and a master’s degree in public administration. Previously, she worked for 17 years at the State Tax Service, where she held more positions, from inspector to deputy director.
