On the 85th anniversary of the first wave of Stalinist deportations of 12–13 June 1941, President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu delivered a commemorative message in memory of the victims of one of the greatest tragedies in the history of our country.

The head of state recalled that tens of thousands of innocent people were deported, entire families were separated, and their destinies were shattered by the Soviet regime. The President urged that the memory of these tragedies be kept alive and that the values for which the deported suffered be defended: freedom, identity, and the right to live without fear.

“Commemorating the deportations is both about the past and about the democratic future we are building together,” the head of state underlined.

At the same time, President Maia Sandu encouraged citizens to visit the train wagon exhibition “State terror in Soviet Moldova. Scale, victims and perpetrators,” organized between 12 June and 6 July in the Great National Assembly Square in Chișinău and in the North Railway Station Square in Bălți.

The head of state also stressed that by knowing and speaking the truth, we honor the memory of those who were deported and can prevent the spread of falsehoods that seek to deny the crimes of the Soviet regime.
