Deputy speaker at UN: I was here for all girls and women of Moldova, about whom I spoke with pride and gratitude
Deputy Speaker Doina Gherman participated in the 69th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, held at the United Nations headquarters in New York. During the event, member states voted on a declaration reaffirming the commitment to protecting the rights of all women and girls.
The Republic of Moldova co-chaired, along with France, Sierra Leone and Panama, the event entitled 'Promoting Gender Equality through Reproductive Rights and Health.' The discussion brought together high-ranking officials, experts and civil society representatives who analyzed policies and solutions to ensure universal access to reproductive health and prevent domestic violence.
In her speech, Doina Gherman highlighted Moldova's progress in this field, including legislative amendments adopted to combat domestic violence, development of integrated health services, and support for girls and women at risk.
On the sidelines of the event, the official met with Deputy Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Diene Keita.
'With UNFPA's support, we have managed to do many good things for women with children, encourage fathers to participate in raising children, and support women in balancing work and family life. We are now working to empower them economically and help them fully use the potential,' Gherman stated.
The current session also marked the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995.
