Government Spokesperson explains authorities' position on gas deliveries to Transnistrian region

Chișinău has not endorsed nor negotiated gas deliveries to the Transnistrian region, but neither has blocked them. Government Spokesman Daniel Vodă explains the authorities' position on gas supplies to the Transnistrian region.

"The government did not block these deliveries, as there is national consensus on this matter. Certainly, everyone who has expressed an opinion in the public space agrees that our citizens in the Transnistrian region should not be left in the cold and dark. We witnessed how Moscow artificially blocked these deliveries and the dramatic consequences of this decision in winter," said Daniel Vodă.

At the same time, Vodă reiterated that the Moldovan authorities negotiate or provide solutions under very clear, transparent conditions.

"When the gas delivered to the Transnistrian region was from European funds — that is, a result of negotiations between Chișinău and European partners — it was subject to strict conditions. The most important provision was that the gas be used exclusively for social purposes," explained Vodă.

Chișinău and Brussels have proposed conditioning the gas to ensure its correct use, Vodă said.

"I remind you again that Chișinău's proposal, also mentioned by European commissioners and other responsible officials, was that this gas be conditioned by using it strictly for the established purposes. This proposal, which remains valid until the end of the heating season, was a central element of the negotiations," Vodă said.

Daniel Vodă confirmed that the natural gas currently being delivered to the Transnistrian region is not from European or Moldovan funds.

"Currently, the gas reaching the Transnistrian region does not come from European funds or Moldovan money," the official said.

Under these conditions, Chișinău is prepared to impose competition taxes to establish equal conditions for business, he said.

"If information about the restart of the industry is confirmed, the Prime Minister mentioned the necessity of imposing competition taxes. This step is essential to ensure a fair framework between the companies on the left bank and the right bank of the Dniester," Vodă said.
