Alegeri parlamentare 2025

President's message to Europe

Russia poses a danger to our democracies. Moldova's democracy is young and fragile, but this does not mean that states with longer-standing democracies are not in danger. Today in our country democracy is in the hands of Moldovans, only they can save the Republic of Moldova. President Maia Sandu conveyed the message after voting.

The official emphasized that the Russian Federation has exerted 'unprecedented pressure on the electoral processes' in the Republic of Moldova.

'We have seen during this period Moscow's propaganda suggesting that the elections are not fair, in a situation where they are the ones putting this unprecedented pressure on our electoral processes, but we have also seen this narrative from Moscow trying to discredit the electoral process in the Republic of Moldova. In a bad scenario, we will continue to fight for democracy, but it is clear that it will be much harder and more complicated. In this bad scenario, we will have to postpone our European integration for many years. Let's do everything not to reach this scenario. Our country deserves a beautiful, positive, and peaceful scenario, for this I invite all Moldovans to vote today,' Maia Sandu said.

The head of state stressed the threats coming from Russia regarding democracy in the Republic of Moldova and throughout Europe.

'My message to Europe was about the danger that Russia presents to our democracies. Moldova is a small country, our democracy is relatively young and still fragile and it is harder for us, but this does not mean that other democracies - states with more experience, which have stronger democratic institutions, are not also at risk. I spoke in Brussels about these risks so that everyone takes them seriously, to prepare because we want to live in a democratic world. Today, democracy in the Republic of Moldova is in the hands of Moldovans. Only they can save democracy, peace, and the bright future of the Republic of Moldova,' Maia Sandu pointed out.

The president of the country highlighted the Russian Federation's interferences undertaken in the context of the parliamentary elections, actions manifested by 'attacks on our country.'

'We know that there have been many interferences, but decisions about sanctions are made by institutions. There have been certain actions taken by the Central Electoral Commission, even this week. We saw again Russia's narrative, where the country's president does not change for decades and the ruling party remains the same, but which gives us lessons in democracy. Russia attacks our democracy on all fronts, and when we try to protect it, it presents these things as anti-democratic. We must be careful and not fall prey to these false narratives coming from Moscow. It is clear that Russia's stake is high, which is why it invests so many resources in the elections in the Republic of Moldova and this cannot be related solely to our country. It is clear that this stake is related primarily to the war in Ukraine. Russia wants to take control of power in Moldova to use the country against Ukraine and some European Union states because here they could train people to send for all kinds of illegal actions in European Union states. They could also launch drones from here, as they do today from Belarus towards European Union states. We know that Russia can do much harm and wants to control the Republic of Moldova to use us against other states. Also, we know that we have a significant vulnerability, which is the Transnistrian region. We know that we have Russian troops stationed there illegally for decades and there is weaponry in this region. Of course, in such conditions, there are risks of destabilization,' Maia Sandu noted.

The citizens of the Republic of Moldova are expected today at the polling stations to choose representatives in the new Parliament. The polling stations opened at 7:00 AM and will close at 9:00 PM.
