State Flag Day: Tricolor of Moldova, symbol of national identity and unity officially celebrated in Chișinău

State Flag Day, a symbol of national unity and the identity of the Republic of Moldova is being marked on Monday, April 27, through a series of official events. The celebrations begin in the morning with the flag-raising ceremony of the Tricolor in front of the Government building.

The event is attended by Speaker Igor Grosu, together with representatives of state institutions.

The Tricolor was officially designated as the State Flag of the Republic of Moldova in 1990 by the deputies of the first Parliament, and later, on April 27, 2010, State Flag Day was established to highlight the importance of this national symbol.

Historians and experts in symbolism emphasize that the State Flag of the Republic of Moldova is one of the most important symbols of national identity, emerging in the context of the national revival movement in the late 1980s.

The Tricolor was adopted on April 27, 1990, by the first democratically elected Parliament, a moment considered decisive in the process of breaking away from Soviet symbolism and returning to the historical traditions of the Prut–Dniester region. According to researchers, the adoption of the flag carried a strong political and symbolic charge, with the Tricolor becoming an element of social mobilization and affirmation of national identity in the period preceding independence. The State Flag marks the rupture from the Soviet period, symbolizes the affirmation of national identity, and remains one of the strongest emblems of the statehood of the Republic of Moldova.

Heraldry experts explain the meaning of the three colors of the flag: blue symbolizes freedom, faith, and the clear sky; yellow represents prosperity and the richness of the land; and red evokes sacrifice and courage for independence. At the same time, the State Flag is considered a symbol of historical continuity, dignity, and unity of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, regardless of region or language.

In academic and civic analyses, the flag is described as a symbol of national cohesion, as well as an element that reflects the political transformations of the Republic of Moldova after 1990. Specialists stress that it has become not only a state emblem, but also a reference point of collective identity in the public sphere and within the diaspora.
