DOC // EU sanctions extended until 2027: Moldova updates list of targeted individuals

Chisinau, April 25 – Moldova has extended the period of application of international sanctions imposed in the context of destabilizing actions till 29 April 2027, and has updated the list of targeted individuals. The decision was published in the Official Journal and shows the country’s continued alignment with the European Union’s restrictive measures.

The amendments concern Decision No. 7 from 1 August 2024 of the Interinstitutional Supervisory Council, the act that regulates the national implementation of European sanctions. Under the new provisions, the deadline for the restrictive measures has been extended by one year, and more entries on the list of sanctioned natural persons have been revised on the basis of updated information.

These adjustments come in the context of recent decisions adopted by the Council of the European Union, which has extended and updated the sanctions’ regime established to counter threats to security, democracy and the rule of law in  Moldova.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has issued an order under which Moldova officially aligns itself with the new European restrictive measures. The document, signed by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihail Popsoi, incorporates into national legislation Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/897 of the EU Council, adopted on 21 April.

Through this step, the Moldovan authorities strengthen the legal framework for the application of sanctions and reconfirm their commitment to act in coordination with European partners in the face of destabilization risks.

The decision of the Interinstitutional Supervisory Council was adopted on the basis of legislation regarding international restrictive measures and the orders issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry on the same day, indicating a synchronization of institutional actions for the effective implementation of sanctions.

The sanctions' regime targets persons and entities involved in actions that undermine the stability of Moldova, and the periodic update of the lists and the duration of application is essential to maintaining its effectiveness.
