VIDEO // Prime Minister: We stand with Ukraine and will support efforts for just peace based on respect for territorial integrity

The Republic of Moldova strongly condemns the war waged by the Russian Federation in Ukraine in the harshest terms. We stand with Ukraine and will support efforts for a just peace, based on international law and respect for territorial integrity. The message was delivered today by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The official stressed that on February 24, 2022, he was in Kyiv, where he heard the first explosions.

“I did not watch the war on television. I was in Kyiv. The sirens did not even go off in the first days; an airfield near my home was being bombed. In a matter of moments, the reality of millions of Ukrainians changed. They were forced to leave their homes in search of a safe shelter, and the war separated entire families, leaving behind pain and uncertainty,” noted Alexandru Munteanu.

The official mentioned that, for four years, the Russian Federation has been waging a barbaric war against Ukraine — four years in which Kremlin has ceaselessly bombed Ukrainian cities, struck energy infrastructure, and turned winters into a weapon against people.

“Russia has brought the war into every Ukrainian’s home and kills innocent people in order to break Ukraine’s spirit. But the spirit of this people is unbreakable. All this time, we have seen people’s determination not to abandon their freedom. We have seen the unity of a people that does not break, but becomes ever stronger and more united. We have also seen European solidarity — human solidarity — thousands of Ukrainian refugees met at the border by our citizens, who opened their homes like brothers and offered them food and shelter. The Republic of Moldova strongly condemns the war waged by the Russian Federation in Ukraine in the harshest terms. We stand with Ukraine and will support efforts for a just peace, based on international law and respect for territorial integrity. So that all those who were forced to leave can return safely home, including the children abducted by the Russian Federation. And that the criminals, the perpetrators of this war are brought to justice,” emphasized Munteanu.

Ukraine was attacked by the Russian Federation on February 24, 2022. Since the beginning of the war, the Republic of Moldova has received the largest number of Ukrainian refugees in Europe in proportion to its population. During the period, refugees in our country have benefited from social, medical, and educational assistance, as well as the opportunity to enter the labor market.
