Chernobyl, 40 years after nuclear accident // Moldovan energy minister in Kyiv reaffirms top priority of safety in nuclear projects

Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu is on a visit to Kyiv and Chernobyl, together with President Maia Sandu, in order to mark 40 years since the 1986 nuclear catastrophe. The official emphasized that this is a moment of reflection, but also of responsibility, both for the past and for the energy future of the region.

“We stand with Ukraine and honor the memory of those who suffered, as well as those who continue to protect lives,” the minister said.

Dorin Junghietu highlighted that the Chernobyl tragedy stayed an important lesson in managing risks in the energy sector, as well as in the need to observe the highest safety standards. According to him, nuclear energy can be a safe and reliable, low-emission source, but only under conditions of responsible and transparent management.

In the context, the minister said that any discussion on the development of nuclear technologies in Moldova or on participation in regional projects would place citizens’ safety at the forefront.

“Nuclear energy can be safe, reliable and low-emission, when it is managed to the highest standards. For Moldova, any discussion about nuclear technologies – including future investments in the Cernavoda plant or small modular reactors – will focus on safety, transparency and, above all, people,” the official underlined.

The Moldovan energy minister is in Kyiv alongside President Maia Sandu, who met her Ukrainian counterpart. President Maia Sandu reaffirmed her strong support for Ukraine during a joint press conference held in Kyiv with her counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky. The visit takes place against the backdrop of new Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, as well as the commemoration of 40 years since the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe.
