Moldovan PM visits settlements hit by heavy rains, flash floods from central district
Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu today went to the central Calarasi district, where more localities were affected by the heavy rains and flash floods on May 22. The PM was accompanied by Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Vladimir Bolea, Interior Minister Daniela Misail-Nichitin and Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder. The officials also went to Bravicea and Hirjauca, where they spoke with local residents who saw their households flooded and roads damaged, as well as with the teams deployed in the field.
“Unfortunately, we have considerable damage, and also one victim. It is a difficult situation for many families and now the most important thing is to stand by the people and intervene quickly where needed. Rescuers, police officers, local authorities and intervention teams are working continuously to pump out water, secure high‑risk areas and assist affected people. We will assess all the damage caused and will step in to support the affected communities, so that people can return to normality as soon as possible,” stated Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.
Following the torrential rains, strong winds and massive water accumulation, the authorities have been operating under enhanced monitoring and intervention mode. The most affected areas are the Calarasi and Ungheni districts. In Calarasi district, a serious situation was recorded in the localities of Hirjauca and Mindra after the protective dam broke, while 11 localities were affected in the Ungheni district.
According to preliminary information from law-enforcers, in the locality of Dereneu, Calarasi district, the death of a 48‑year‑old man was recorded, in circumstances associated with the heavy rains and floods that occurred the previous evening.
According to operational data, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations carried out interventions to pump out water, clear fallen trees, remove dangerous objects and conduct search‑and‑rescue operations. Eighty‑five specialized vehicles and more than 300 employees were deployed in the field.
At the same time, the authorities intervened to restore road and rail traffic conditions. Trains temporarily affected have resumed movement and passengers arrived safely at their destinations. Teams in the energy sector acted to repair faults and reconnect consumers affected by partial power outages.
The 112 Service registered 5,748 calls and 3,283 emergencies. High‑risk areas continue to be patrolled and secured, and Chișinău International Airport is operating as normal.
The authorities continue their interventions in the field and will return with additional information depending on how the situation evolves.
