Russian Federal Security Service officer detained in Moldova for unauthorized collection of information targeting region on left bank of Dniester
A citizen of the Russian Federation, an FSB (Federal Security Service) officer, has been detained upon entering Moldova for the unauthorized collection of information targeting the region on the left bank of the Dniester, specifically the Security Zone.
The actions were carried out on the basis of data managed by the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS).
"The officer attempted to enter Moldova on the basis of a cover story prepared in advance, with a tourist purpose – visiting monasteries – but in reality, his final destination was the region on the left bank of Dniester. More precisely, the purpose of the accused's visit was to collect data and information for their storage or use to the detriment of the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, state security or defense capability of Moldova," the SIS said.
The institution noted that the man had previously been in Moldova, between September 2017 and September 2019, when he directed activities carried out against the security, independence and territorial integrity of the country.
"The Moldovan law-enforcement authorities also draw attention to the fact that, during that period, the foreign citizen used a diplomatic passport issued by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Nevertheless, contrary to the provisions of the Vienna Convention, he did not undergo accreditation with the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs," the SIS specified.
At the request of the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Causes, the accused was placed in pre-trial detention for 30 days.
The investigations in this case are ongoing.
