Head of state says Moldovans have duty to preserve, defend sovereignty, independence, peace of Moldova
President Maia Sandu, on Sovereignty Day, marked on June 23, emphasized the importance of the historic moment in 1990, when Moldova took a decisive step towards independence and the right to determine its own future.
The head of state noted that the European path of Moldova had its roots in the courage and aspirations of the generation which, on June 23, 1990, adopted the Declaration of Sovereignty and chose to break away from the Soviet regime. According to the Moldovan President, the efforts and sacrifices made at that time made possible the country’s current course towards European integration and the consolidation of democracy.
“Thirty-six years ago, Moldovans fought for sovereignty and for the right to decide their own fate. More than 36 years later, Moldova is truly shaping its own destiny,” said President Maia Sandu.
In the context of security challenges in the region, the head of state drew attention to the fact that sovereignty and independence must be defended constantly. The President condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the Kremlin’s attempts to destroy, through war, a sovereign state’s right to decide its own destiny.
“We have the duty to preserve and defend the sovereignty, independence and peace of Moldova,” the Moldovan President underlined.
