Moldovan president at EU–Moldova Summit says Moldova doing its part, leadership counts on support of 27 member states
President Maia Sandu in Brussels today took part in the second Moldova – European Union Summit, alongside President of the European Council António Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. At the end, the leaders adopted a joint declaration and held a news conference, confirming that Moldova’s future lies in the European Union.
The summit is a regular high-level dialogue format. The leaders discussed the next steps in the accession negotiations, the country’s reforms agenda, as well as economic development and cooperation in the fields of energy, security and defence.
The meeting takes place one week after the opening of the accession negotiations on the first cluster of chapters — “Fundamental values”. Both the European Commission and the European Council confirmed that Moldova was ready to open negotiations on all clusters of chapters, based on merit. “Moldova is doing its part. We count on the support of the 27 member states,” said President Maia Sandu.
At the same time, three agreements were signed during the summit: the company Gebauer & Griller and the European Commission signed a letter of intent that will link Moldova’s automotive industry even more closely to the European one. The Commission and the advanced technology park Moldova HiTech Park are joining forces to create an entrepreneurship and research centre in medical technology. In addition, the Education and Research Ministry signed a framework agreement with the Joint Research Centre of the Commission, in order to jointly develop research and innovation.
Addressing citizens at home, the head of state said that Moldova’s partnership with the European Union was becoming ever stronger and that reforms were being recognized and rewarded — with European funds, with investments and with trust. “As we move forward, each step brings concrete results for people: peace, security, and opportunities at home, in the European family,” said Maia Sandu.
