VIDEO // Prime Minister on Sovereignty Day: European path - sovereign choice of the Republic of Moldova
The European path is the sovereign choice of the Republic of Moldova. The European Union is a community of sovereign states, and we want to be part of it precisely because we aspire to a stronger, safer and more prosperous country. This message was delivered today by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, on the occasion of Sovereignty Day.
The official emphasized that today the citizens of the Republic of Moldova are celebrating their right to decide the future of this country on their own.
“Thirty-six years ago, through the Declaration of Sovereignty, a decisive step towards independence was taken. It was the moment when we said that we want to determine our own future and to build a free and democratic state. And today, sovereignty means the same thing. It means being able to decide by ourselves the direction in which our country is heading. It means institutions that work for the people, respect for the law, engagement and responsibility from each one of us,” said Munteanu.
The Prime Minister stressed that the European path is the sovereign choice of the people of the Republic of Moldova.
“We choose the direction in which we are heading. No one can impose this direction on us, and no one can take away our right to follow it. The European Union is a community of sovereign states, and we want to be part of it precisely because we aspire to a stronger, safer and more prosperous country. Sovereignty does not belong to a government or to any institution. It belongs to the citizens. That is why each of us contributes, day by day, to the future of the Republic of Moldova, through work, through involvement and through care for those around us. I thank all of you who believe in this country and contribute to its development,” remarked Munteanu.
The Republic of Moldova is celebrating Sovereignty Day today. On 23 June 1990, the deputies of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic adopted the Declaration of Sovereignty – a document that paved the way towards independence, democracy and the rule of law.
