Seven student dormitories of Moldova to be fully renovated; investment reaches 15 million euros

Seven student dormitories of Moldova will be fully renovated in the coming years, providing better living conditions for students. The work will cost 15 million euros and will be carried out thanks to the extension of the Higher Education in Moldova project, funded by the World Bank.

Thus, within the aforementioned project, Moldova will be able to access additional funding of about 38 million euros, funds that are to be invested in the modernization of higher education in our country.

‘’The money will be used for strengthening the financial capacities of universities. We will invest in the internationalization area, in order to attract more foreign students to Moldova, so that universities have higher revenues, are more financially sustainable and can reinvest these resources. To achieve this, we will also have an important infrastructure component. Therefore, we will fully renovate about seven dormitories. For this, we will spend a sum of 15 million euros. The dormitories will be used primarily by Moldovan students, but will also provide a certain number of rooms for those coming from abroad, in order to create decent conditions for everyone and to become more attractive,’’ said Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun, during the weekly summary.

At the same time, another component of the project, valued at 12 million euros, will be dedicated to equipping research institutions of Moldova.

‘’In this respect, we carried out an important reform in 2022. Research institutions were integrated into universities. Now, this will be a first real project to endow the targeted institutions with the necessary equipment, in order to increase their capacity to attract European funds,’’ Dan Perciun noted.

Also, through the same project, a sum of 4.5 million euros will be allocated to create an innovative center in agriculture, due to combine agriculture with information technology. The resources are meant for the Technical University of Moldova, which will invest the money in the university campus at Mircesti, of the former Agrarian University.

The Higher Education in Moldova project, with a total value of over 35 million euros, is implemented by Moldova’s Ministry of Education and Research (MEC) and is funded by the World Bank during 2020-2025. Under it, so far, seven universities and six pedagogical colleges of the country have benefited from major investments, going through an extensive modernization and equipping process, while study programs have been adapted to current labor market requirements. Thanks to these investments, almost 48 thousand students and over 2,300 teaching staff benefit from better learning and teaching conditions.

This week, the government approved a decision stating that the Higher Education in Moldova project, funded by the World Bank, will be extended until December 31, 2029.

In recent years, an unprecedented sum of 500 million euros has been invested in modernizing the universities of the country.

Thus, last year, the number of young people choosing to continue their studies in universities Moldova increased, exceeding 16,300, up by 1,333 people against 2023.

This year, MEC launched, for the first time, a campaign to promote university studies in the country, Learn in Moldova. Through this, the authorities aim to convince as many young people as possible to continue their undergraduate and master's studies at universities of Moldova.
