Governor of National Bank of Moldova says country becomes regional model of stability, innovation, European integration

Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) Anca Dragu has delivered a strong message on the country's development direction at a roundtable titled, Risks, Opportunities, and Anchors for Development of Financial and Banking System in the New Global Context, organized as part of the Bucharest Leaders’ Summit: The Path to 5.0. From Vision to Reality.

Anca Dragu highlighted that, in the face of global challenges, Moldova relied on financial stability, responsible innovation and European integration – three essential pillars on which the National Bank of Moldova has built its vision.

"In this global context of transformation, the National Bank of Moldova is a pillar of stability, a driver of innovation and a facilitator of our European path," the   governor said.

According to Anca Dragu, the Moldovan banking sector is well-capitalized, resilient and prepared for possible external shocks. Progress in modern banking services is notable: over 600,000 people are already using the instant payment system MIA, with over one million transactions per month totaling more than 4.8 billion Moldovan lei.

"For the first time, digital payments have exceeded the volume of cash withdrawals from ATMs – a clear signal of the change in mindset and the modernization of the economy," emphasized Anca Dragu.

At the same time, Moldova has recently become a member of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), and seven out of the ten commercial banks of the country have been accepted for technical interconnection with the European system.

In her speech, the BNM governor also emphasized the institution's role in the process of joining the European Union, leading negotiations on three key chapters: Free movement of capital, Financial services and Economic and monetary policy.

"Moldova has all the attributes to become Europe's wonder child – an ambitious country that is rapidly developing and seriously building a European central bank in thinking action, and vision," Anca Dragu also said.

The event in which the governor participated is part of the series dedicated to the 29th edition of the national project, Together We Protect Romania, held on May 21- June 16, 2025, with the participation of over 400 leaders, experts and officials from the region, who discussed a sustainable economic future.
