VIDEO // Moldovan environment minister warns: strong winds up to 27 m/s, frost on nights to come

Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder has provided clarifications on the evolution of weather conditions, in the context of the Orange Code for wind, in force until 21:00. The official warned that the maximum intensity of gusts was felt at midday, when temperature differences favor the formation of strong winds.

According to the minister, gusts of up to 25 m/s have been recorded in some settlements, with the highest intensity reported in Soroca. Hajder stressed that the authorities were on alert and were continuously monitoring the situation.

“We feel the maximum intensity at midday, when we have larger temperature differences, which generate stronger winds. In some localities, wind speeds have reached up to 25 m/s (recorded in Soroca), and the latest recording of maximum wind speed was 27 m/s in Chisinau,” Hajder said.

The official urged the population to exercise caution, avoid non-essential walk and not park cars near trees or other objects that could be knocked down by the wind.

At the same time, the minister noted that the responsible institutions were prepared to intervene quickly in case of emergency situations.

“We are in contact with our colleagues from the Infrastructure and Regional Development Ministry, so that if fallen trees appear on roads, they can be promptly removed, in order not to create obstacles for citizens,” the minister said.

Gheorghe Hajder said that the weather phenomenon was caused by a cold atmospheric front, associated with a cyclone, which is crossing the region and will influence the weather also on the following day.

The minister reiterated his call to citizens to stay safe and follow the recommendations of the authorities:

“Our request is to avoid trips that are not mandatory, in order to remain safe. We will return with updated information, as the situation evolves.”

The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) warns the population about the increased risks of vegetation fires, falling trees and other dangerous situations and provides a set of recommendations to prevent incidents. Rescuers urge citizens to act responsibly and to comply with the following safety measures.
