Women researchers of Moldova awarded on International Day of Women and Girls in Science

The contribution of women to scientific progress and the challenges related to accessing leadership positions today were highlighted during a festive event dedicated to the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Dozens of women researchers of Moldova, with outstanding results, were awarded certificates of excellence.

Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun emphasized the role of women in the development of domestic research and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to promoting gender equality and supporting their professional advancement.

“You are living proof that women have a major, extremely important contribution and are at the forefront of research of Moldova. For this, we would like to thank you, on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Research, and to reiterate our strong commitment to promoting gender equality, supporting scientific activity among women, and everything that concerns their advancement in Moldovan society,” the official said.

Women researchers received certificates of excellence in such fields as computer science, biology, genetics, organic chemistry, ecology, as well as history, philology, and political science. The distinctions recognized the impressive number of international publications, the coordination of complex projects and their innovative contributions with social impact.

The event continued with a discussion panel entitled, Women and Girls in Science: Role, Future and Solidarity, which addressed the “glass ceiling” phenomenon and the need to create an institutional environment that supports the balance between professional and family life.

Director of the National Agency for Research and Development Aurelia Hanganu reiterated support for attracting European funds and highlighted the increasingly active involvement of teams led by women in the Horizon Europe programme. At the same time, new support measures were presented, such as increasing scholarships for PhD students in STEM fields and launching a national programme aimed at attracting researchers from the diaspora.

Established by the United Nations, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science promotes equitable access and the full participation of women in science, technology and innovation, underlining the role of research and gender equality in the sustainable development of society.
