Denmark, Norway, Sweden contribute to Moldova's energy vulnerability reduction fund through UNDP

The Scandinavian countries - Denmark, Norway and Sweden - are contributing to the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund (EVRF) through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Denmark is providing 5.59 million dollars, Norway - 8.86 million dollars and Sweden - 9.9 million dollars. The funds will allow Moldova’s government to ensure the provision of energy compensations to energy-vulnerable households in the present cold season.

“I want to express my deep gratitude to the governments of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, who have shown us their generosity and friendship during difficult times for our country. This donation will be used to help the most vulnerable people and ensure their warmth and safety in this cold season. Your support and goodwill are greatly appreciated and we are honored to have you as reliable partners in the social protection sector,” said Minister of Labor and Social Protection Alexei Buzu.

For her part, UNDP Resident Representative in Moldova Daniela Gasparikova said  that UNDP appreciated the significant contribution of Denmark, Norway and Sweden to Moldova’s Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund and the solidarity with Moldovan citizens facing increasing energy prices.

“At the same time, our work does not stop at short-term improvement. Together with our partners, we are committed to making Moldova’s energy system more resilient, making sure that people have access to sustainable and affordable energy in the long term,” emphasized Daniela Gasparikova.

The Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund (EVRF) was established in 2022 by the government of Moldova, with support from the European Union, Slovakia and UNDP. Since its launch, the Fund has provided compensations to over 895,000 households.

UNDP has supported the government in mobilizing resources for the Fund. In the 2022-2023 season, UNDP facilitated a contribution of 10 million dollars to the EVRF from Sweden and 6.67 million dollars from Switzerland. In the 2023-2024 season, Sweden contributed 9.63 million dollars and Italy contributed 5 million euros to the Fund through UNDP.

UNDP, Italy and other development partners continue to provide support in the 2024-2025 cold season, in order to ensure the work of the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund, the modernization of the IT system and the dedicated call center's operation.
