Moldovan Railways prepares new investments to strengthen railway connection to Giurgiulesti Port
The state-owned enterprise Moldovan Railways (CFM) is identifying new opportunities to develop logistics infrastructure and strengthen the railway connection to Giurgiulesti Port, one of the main routes for freight transport and international trade in the Republic of Moldova.
One of the projects currently in the communication and consultation phase with interested partners involves the construction of a multifunctional module at Prut station. The facility would support the development of logistics services, cargo transshipment and handling operations, as well as improved connectivity between railway and road infrastructure.
“We are discussing the possibility of extending the railway line to the State Port of Giurgiulesti. This solution would allow cargo to be loaded and unloaded directly in the port area, without additional intermediate transport operations,” CFM explains.
According to the enterprise, this could reduce costs and increase the efficiency of logistics operations.
To prepare for this stage, CFM has carried out several rehabilitation and infrastructure reinforcement works on the railway route to Giurgiulesti. These include the rehabilitation of the Valeni section, including the reinforcement of the embankment and the bank of the Prut River; the reopening of the Prut–Falciu connection, which links to Romania’s railway infrastructure; and the rehabilitation of the overpasses at Cahul, Prut and Iargara.
The resumption of container transport and the development of freight flows have contributed to increased activity on this section. According to CFM, in the last three months alone, the use of the railway section generated revenues of more than 20 million lei for the enterprise.
“The completed works and the projects currently being prepared aim to harness the strategic potential of the railway connection to Giurgiulesti and strengthen it as a freight transport route between the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Ukraine and European markets,” Moldovan Railways states.
