National Wine Day 2025 marked by tradition, innovation, international recognition
The Republic of Moldova celebrates its wine heritage through the National Wine Day 2025, on October 4-5 in the Great National Assembly Square in Chișinău.
The event, now in its 24th edition, gathers over 100 winemakers from all regions of the country, offering visitors a complex experience: tastings, masterclasses, folk performances, and the discovery of Moldovan wine identity titled 'Our Amazingly Good Wine'.
Wine Tastings and Education
Visitors have access to collection wines, limited editions, and established varieties, as well as educational experiences like the 'Wine School', where certified sommeliers explain tasting techniques, wine and gastronomy pairing, and best serving practices. For active involvement, participants can purchase the Taster's Booklet, which includes 11 tastings and a favorite wine, plus discounts and a reusable tritan glass.
Organizers have also prepared sessions dedicated to young people and children, aimed at cultivating respect for viticultural traditions and the role of wine in the national culture. The atmosphere is complemented by folk performances, dances, craft demonstrations, and authentic gastronomy.
Awards and Recognitions
One of the anticipated moments is the awarding of the National Wine Day Grand Prize to a winery with remarkable results in quality and the promotion of wine tourism. The 2025 edition brings two new distinctions:
The Wine Creator's Trophy, for small producers, a sector in full expansion (from 10 wineries a decade ago to 72 today);
The Distillate Creator's Trophy, recognizing brandy and distillate producers, integrated for the first time into the competition.
'By diversifying the awards, we want to reflect the entire spectrum of actors in the viticultural industry - from established wineries to entrepreneurs who combine tradition with innovation', said Andrian Digolean, State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry.
The Connection with a Historic Year for Moldovan Wine
National Wine Day 2025 takes place in a special context: in June, the Republic of Moldova hosted the World Congress of Vine and Wine for the first time, a major event that brought together experts and decision-makers from 51 member countries of the International Organization of Vine and Wine. The hosting is considered a historic moment for world viticulture and an important step in strengthening the international image of Moldovan wine.
In the same spirit, the brand 'Wine of Moldova' gained special visibility through the inauguration of a dedicated space at 'Eugen Doga' International Airport - Chișinău, where tourists can discover local wines right at the entry and exit gate of the country.
Moldovan Wine - A Success Story on International Markets
Moldovan wine increasingly confirms its status as an ambassador of the country abroad. While National Wine Day remains an occasion for celebration domestically, producers' participation in international exhibitions and fairs represents true gateways to the world, through which Moldova showcases its viticultural potential.
Earlier this year, wineries from the Republic of Moldova were present in Paris and Düsseldorf, where thousands of producers and experts from around the world gather. The stands united under the brand 'Wine of Moldova. A Legend Alive' attracted attention through the diversity of assortments and the recognized quality of the wines. Tastings, masterclasses, and meetings with importers confirmed that Moldova is no longer just a participant in such events but an increasingly visible player on the global market.
Economic results speak for themselves. In the last year, exports of Moldovan wine increased by almost a fifth in volume and a quarter in value. In total, over 120 million liters of wine products reached external markets, bringing about 190 million dollars to the national economy. Romania remains the main export destination, followed by Poland and the Czech Republic, but more distant markets like the United States, Japan, or China are gaining ground.
Another positive signal is the increase in the average price of an exported bottle, which shows that Moldovan wines are no longer sold just by volume but also by value. In Japan, for example, consumers pay almost twice as much as the international average for a bottle from Moldova, indicating that premium wines are increasingly finding their way to quality lovers.
For producers, participating in international exhibitions means more than contracts and new markets. It is an opportunity to build an image, to demonstrate that centuries-old viticultural tradition today blends with modern technologies and high standards. And, above all, to convey the story of Moldovan wine - a living story that continues to conquer the world, glass by glass.
A Celebration of National Identity
National Wine Day is not just a celebration dedicated to producers but an affirmation of wine as a symbol of Moldova's identity and cultural heritage. Through tastings, the awards offered, and related events, the 2025 edition confirms that Moldovan wine is not only a product of internationally recognized quality but also a living story, shared with every generation.
