Tricolor hoisted on pillar set on Country's Energy Independence Line - Vulcanesti - Chisinau, on State Flag Day

A Tricolor flag was hoisted atop one of the over 100 pillars set on the 400 kV Vulcanesti – Chisinau power line, on the State Flag Day. According to the authorities, once completed, this line will allow electricity imports from Romania, bypassing the Transnistrian region and will eliminate the last leverage of energy blackmail from Russia.

Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu emphasized that the power line, with a designed capacity of 630 MVA, would be able to meet half of the country's energy needs during peak consumption hours and would be completed by the end of this year.

“If the Tricolor is associated with the fight for independence of Moldova, then what can be closer to it than the Country's Energy Independence Line - Vulcanesti- Chisinau. Cristian Pilipeț, a height worker on the pole installation, greets you today from the top of one of the over 100 poles already installed on the 400 kV Vulcanesti – Chisinau power line,” said Dorin Junghietu.

The minister specified that Moldova had inherited an electricity transmission infrastructure that developed, but not sufficiently.

“For better integration into the European market, we need interconnections. The Vulcanesti – Chisinau line project is advancing very well. We already have progress on the entire project of over 60 percent. More than 300 foundations have been completed and 100 poles are ready,” said Dorin Junghietu.

The construction work on the Vulcanesti-Chisinau Power Line effectively began in April 2024 and is part of the Power System Development Project, financed by the World Bank Group. Its value is 61 million euros, of which about 27 million euros is for the construction of the line.

The construction of the Vulcanesti-Chisinau Power Line is a strategically important project for the energy security of Moldova. The new power line will allow the transmission of electricity from Romania or other European markets to Chisinau, without passing through the Moldovan power station (MGRES), located in the Transnistrian region.
