Moldovan PM, European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice and Rule of Law discuss justice reform
Prime Minister Dorin Recean and European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, and the Rule of Law Michael McGrath, on a visit to Chisinau, have had a discussion on the latest developments in implementing the justice reform.
PM Dorin Recean emphasized that the justice reform was the most complex and difficult to achieve; however, only by guaranteeing the rule of law can the sustainability of reforms in all other areas be ensured. “We are not doing this to join the European Union, but because, first and foremost, it is in the interest of the people. We want to move quickly, but with all the necessary seriousness and analysis to do things right,” said Prime Minister Dorin Recean.
In particular, the officials discussed the fight against corruption and security risks, digitalizing justice processes, de-oligarchization, ensuring the integrity of state institutions, evaluating judges and keeping professionals in justice.
Commissioner Michael McGrath praised the measures taken by the government, noting that the transformations were not easy and the EU would continue to provide all needed assistance to support the Moldovan authorities' efforts.
A specific topic of discussion was the electoral corruption, as part of the hybrid attacks on behalf of Russia, which run the risk of escalating by the autumn 2025 elections. In the context, Commissioner Michael McGrath emphasized the importance of ensuring free and fair elections.
European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, Rule of Law, and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath is on an official visit to Chisinau on June 5-6. The official has meetings at governmental and legislative levels, as well as with civil society representatives, for an open dialogue on justice reform, democracy, consumer rights and the European path of Moldova.
