Moldovan electoral body speeds up digitalization of electoral processes
The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) is strengthening its position towards the digitalization of electoral processes, turning this endeavor into a key strategic goal. At the Moldova Digital Summit 2025, CEC head Angelica Caraman unveiled recent developments in the implementation of informational technologies in elections’ organization. She highlighted the central role of the State Automated Information System (SIAS) Elections.
According to Angelica Caraman, SIAS Elections currently integrates over 15 functional modules, with another five under development. The digital platform covers all stages of the electoral process and is implemented in over 2,000 polling stations, with about 4,000 network-connected workstations. The system allows real-time tracking of voter presence, prevents multiple voting and ensures the quick display of preliminary data on election day.
‘’We have significantly accelerated the digitalization. Technology brings benefits, as well as responsibilities. After the massive cyberattacks in 2024, we strengthened the cybersecurity of the systems in cooperation with STISC,’’ said Caraman.
Among the novelties introduced at the elections held in autumn 2024, there are: an information system for postal voting; subscription-based electoral lists and scanners and tablets for voters’ identification in crowded Diaspora polling stations.
The CEC head reiterated the institution's commitment to organize a professional, transparent election, adapted to current technological realities, ensuring the integrity of the democratic process in Moldova.
The parliamentary elections will take place in Moldova on September 28, 2025.
