Moldovan PM visits family plantations in Cahul district village, growing largest table grapes in Moldova

Prime Minister Dorin Recean has visited the agricultural business of the Mihov family in Burlacu village, southern Cahul district. On an area of approximately 2,000 hectares, the entrepreneurs cultivate fruit trees, field crops and vineyards, being known throughout the country for growing the largest table grape specimens. Over the years, they have managed to plant over 130 varieties brought from all over the world.

PM Dorin Recean discussed with the entrepreneurs the company's journey of over two decades and how they had modernized the business, including through government-funded programmes.

“It is a pride to see how Moldovans innovate, invest and show us that the future of Moldovan agriculture lies in technologization. The Mihov family shows us that, through hard work and clear vision, Moldova can and has the potential to develop sustainable and smart agriculture,” said the prime minister.

So far, the company has benefited from investments worth over 3 million lei from public funds. With government support, the entrepreneurs managed to install a modern water pumping station and an efficient irrigation system, which assures them a harvest at least three times larger and helps them respond more effectively to climate challenges, such as drought or early frosts.

They also built three accumulation lakes and the orchard is equipped with its own weather station, which monitors atmospheric conditions and pest risks, as well as soil moisture sensors for precisely managed irrigation.

Presently, the company is an important employer in the region, with 146 permanent employees and dozens of seasonal workers.

During his visit to the Mihov family enterprise, Prime Minister Dorin Recean also discussed with other entrepreneurs in the region about solutions and advanced technologies that ensure crop predictability and products’ quality. In 2021, 16 producers of the Cahul district became members of the Table Grapes cluster and, through the EU4Moldova: Focal Regions programme, benefited from funding amounting to 100,000 euros to invest in modern equipment, training and experience exchange.
