Chisinau advocates replacing current peacekeeping format with civilian mission; Moldovan deputy PM for reintegration says this might contribute to country’s reintegration process
The Chisinau authorities are advocating the replacement of the current peacekeeping format in the security zone with a civilian mission, which might genuinely contribute to the country’s reintegration process. Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri today made statements to this effect, in the context of marking 34 years since the launch of the peacekeeping operation.
According to the official, at present this militarized mission creates the impression that there is still an active conflict.
“If we look at the peacekeepers’ posts on the Dniester, we see armed personnel and military equipment. The perception of everyone who goes there is that this conflict is ongoing. In reality, this conflict ended a long time ago. Maintaining this perception serves a political interest of those in Tiraspol, who are trying to create the impression that the conflict situation persists,” said Valeriu Chiveri.
The peacekeeping operation in the security zone was launched on July 29, 1992. The measure was implemented on the basis of the Agreement on the principles of the peaceful settlement of the armed conflict in the Transnistrian region.
