Moldovan government rejects George Simion's accusations

Romanians in the Republic of Moldova voted freely. The large number of people who turned out to vote in Moldova for the Romanian presidential elections shows how much Moldovans care about Romania's future. This was the response of the Government of the Republic of Moldova to the accusations made by the leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), George Simion, a candidate for the presidency of Romania.

Two days after the voting process ended, George Simion accused Moldova of fraud and declared that he would contest the election results at the Constitutional Court.

“100 million euros was the budget allocated in the Republic of Moldova for electoral tourism and for buying the will of Bessarabian Romanians,” Simion declared.

The Government of the Republic of Moldova categorically rejects George Simion's accusations.

“Romanians in the Republic of Moldova voted freely. The large number of people who turned out to vote in Moldova for the Romanian presidential elections shows how much they care about Romania's future,” mentioned the Government of Moldova.

At the same time, the authorities in Chișinău appeal to political actors to avoid unfounded accusations.

“Electoral campaigns can be accompanied by tensions and emotions, but out of respect for all Romanian citizens, we appeal to political actors to avoid unfounded accusations and insults towards voters in the Republic of Moldova. Thank you,” government's spokesperson Daniel Vodă said.

On May 18, the runoff presidential elections was held in Romania. Victory was claimed by independent candidate Nicușor Dan, who has got 53.6% of the votes, surpassing his opponent George Simion by about 8%.

64 polling stations were opened in Moldova. The election was attended by 158,000 Moldovans with Romanian citizenship, recording a historic turnout.
