Moldovan president says unjust peace in Ukraine, which would not be lasting, would mean risk for Moldova

A peace in Ukraine that would give the Kremlin time to consolidate its forces and return is bad news for everyone: for Ukraine and the countries in the region, including Moldova. President Maia Sandu today made statements to this effect at a news conference.

According to the official, the situation regarding the fate of the peace agreement proposed by the American administration is still uncertain.

“The likelihood that this agreement will be signed by the Russians is not high. I do not see any signs from the Kremlin that it wants to stop the war. Of course, an unjust peace and a peace that would not be lasting would mean a risk for Moldova. This thing, in the context where a peace that would give the Kremlin time to consolidate its forces and return, is bad news for everyone: for Ukraine and all the countries in the region, including for Moldova. We hope that the war will stop as soon as possible and that an understanding will be reached that will mean a lasting peace and not just a halt to the war, so that Russia can return in a few months with greater forces,” Maia Sandu said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he will have another meeting with his American counterpart Donald Trump. The U.S. special envoy, Steve Witkoff today said that “significant progress” had been made in the peace talks on Ukraine and that the negotiations had been reduced to a single issue.

Russia currently controls about one fifth of Ukraine, including the Crimean Peninsula, which it annexed in 2014. Moscow wants Ukraine to withdraw its troops from parts of the Donetsk region, that Russia does not control, but claims as its own territory. For its part, Ukraine, which has rejected the idea of ceding territory to Moscow, wants the fighting along the current front line to stop.
