VIDEO // Diplomat’s Day 2026; foreign affairs minister says every relationship of trust built by Moldova bears imprint of country's diplomats’ work

The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) today marked the Diplomat’s Day with a ceremony attended by the institution’s leadership, diplomats and public servants from the diplomatic system of Moldova. The event offered a retrospective of diplomatic activities in 2025 and highlighted the role of diplomats in promoting the country’s interests internationally.

During the event, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional capacities, continuing active involvement in attracting new partnerships that would contribute to the country’s economic development, as well as enhancing its visibility on the international stage. He also noted the dedication and professionalism of all members of the diplomatic corps:

“Diplomat’s Day is an opportunity to congratulate one another and to pay tribute to all those who contribute every day to promoting the interests of Moldova abroad. Diplomacy is more than a profession – it is a vocation, a mission that entails responsibility and an unwavering commitment to the state. It is built on the experience and professionalism of career diplomats, who over the years have contributed to the institutional strengthening of the Foreign Affairs Ministry and to the self-assertion of Moldova internationally. At the same time, I am pleased to see that the MAE team is being complemented by young diplomats who bring energy, new ideas and a modern vision, essential for adapting our diplomacy to current realities. The year 2025 was a fruitful one for the foreign policy of Moldova. We expanded the diplomatic presence of Moldova abroad, which helped strengthen political dialogue and cooperation with international partners. Among the achievements, there are the opening of the Embassy of Moldova in Astana, the inauguration of the Consulates General in Chicago and Sacramento, as well as the change of status of the Consulate in Padua to Consulate General. Through sustained efforts, we have got tangible results to support our citizens, wherever they may be. Together with colleagues from diplomatic missions, we contributed to the signing of bilateral and multilateral treaties in such areas as social protection, security and education, aimed at protecting the rights of our citizens and facilitating their mobility and integration into communities in their countries of residence. At the same time, we worked intensively to offer Moldovan communities in the Diaspora better access to consular services and to keep them connected to Moldova. Together with the team of the European Integration Office, we took concrete steps to move forward toward achieving the strategic goal of European integration. The 2025 enlargement report presented by the European Commission confirms that Moldova is advancing steadily in the accession process and that we are on the right track. At the same time, this progress makes us responsible for maintaining the pace of reforms. Today, our country has more friends than ever before. Moldova is a respected and credible state, firmly committed to the path of European integration. These results are the fruit of the constant, often discreet but extremely important work carried out by our diplomats. The regional and international context stays complex, but I am convinced that we will manage to respond effectively to these challenges and to continue strengthening the position of Moldova abroad. In this regard, I extend my sincere thanks to all members of the diplomatic and consular corps, both within the central headquarters of the Foreign Affairs Ministry and in the diplomatic missions and consular offices of Moldova abroad, for the professionalism, dedication and commitment you show every day.”

On this occasion, higher diplomatic ranks and decorations were awarded to MAE employees, both from the central apparatus and from diplomatic missions and consular offices.

The title, Diplomat of the Year 2025, was awarded to Ambassador of Moldova to France, Corina Calugaru, for her outstanding contribution to promoting the country’s interests. In addition, Diplomat of the Month diplomas were presented to employees who distinguished themselves through their results in external activities.

The event included the taking of the oath of allegiance by new public servants and the official naming of the MAE Conference Hall as the Nicolae Țâu Hall, in honor of the first foreign minister who contributed to strengthening Moldovan diplomacy.

Present at the event, Nicolae Țâu delivered a message of thanks and emphasized the mission of diplomats in supporting and defending the interests of Moldova around the world:

“Diplomacy is a difficult science and art, and every diplomat bears the responsibility of promoting national interests. For this work, you deserve gratitude. I congratulate you on the occasion of Diplomat’s Day and wish you success!”

Diplomat’s Day, celebrated in Moldova on January 17, also marks the date on which the country submitted its application for United Nations membership, an event that represented an important moment in consolidating and affirming Moldovan diplomacy internationally.
