
Additional investments of 37.8 million euros to modernize Moldovan universities with World Bank support
Moldovan universities will benefit from additional funding of about 37.8 million euros for development projects to be implemented over the next four years. The resources will be allocated within Moldova Higher Education project, funded by the World Bank.
The agreement for the additional financing of the project was approved today by the Government.
Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun explained that the decision is related to the extension of the current project implemented together with the World Bank and the mobilization of another 38 million euros for the modernization of institutions. Out of this amount, 15 million euros will go towards the modernization of seven university dormitories. At the same time, for the first time, resources will be allocated towards equipping research institutions.
"In the last four years, we have managed to invest over 400 million lei in the modernization of universities, and with today's decision, we will continue this dynamic, which last year allowed us to have the best university admission in Moldova in the last eight years," said the minister.
The agreement provides for a loan of 30 million euros and a grant of 7.8 million euros to continue the modernization of higher education. Based on the project, investments will be made in university infrastructure. Thus, at least seven student dormitories will be renovated, research centers and learning environments will be modernized.
Additionally, research infrastructure will be upgraded, and ten organizations in the fields of research and innovation within higher education institutions will be equipped. Young researchers will be offered grants for the dissemination of research results, and UTM will see the creation of the Innovation Center in Agriculture.
Moldova Higher Education project, with a total value of over 35 million euros, is implemented by the Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic of Moldova and funded by the World Bank in 2020 - 2025. Seven universities and six pedagogical colleges in the country, which have undergone a comprehensive process of modernization and infrastructure equipping, as well as study programs adapted to current labor market requirements, have benefited from major investments. Thanks to these investments, almost 48,000 students and over 2,300 teachers benefit from better learning and teaching conditions.
