Moldovan citizens can apply for new type ID cards as of today

Citizens of the Republic of Moldova can apply for new type ID cards as of today. The first million ID cards will be issued free of charge to first time applicants, with a deadline of 20 working days.

“Starting today, we can request the new type identity cards! I just made an online appointment using EVO app – simple, convenient, through the Public Services Agency's appointment. The new document is a concrete step towards a Digital Moldova and a Moldova closer to the European Union,” government's spokesperson Daniel Vodă said.

The new identity card will contain electronic data: all data from the printed and inscribed format; means of qualified electronic signature; biometric data of the holder (facial image and if needed, fingerprint images).

The identity card will not contain information about the holder's domicile and temporary residence, allowing the elimination of the need to replace it every time the holder changes the place of residence.

Identity cards will include the electronic signature. This way, holders will be able to authenticate in the informational systems of public institutions to request various electronic public services (banking, tax, social, financial, educational, etc.) without queuing at the window.

Holders of the identity cards will authenticate in the following informational systems: MSign, MPower, MPass, MNotify, MCabinet, eVMS, e-Raportare, e-Declarație, e-Factura, e-Licențiere, e-Stare Civilă, e-Achiziții, etc. Citizens will be able to sign official documents, applications, or declarations without being present at the offices of public institutions.

Over time, identity cards will gain extended utility, being used not only for identification within the territory of the Republic of Moldova but also as a travel document in countries that recognize them (for example, European Union member countries).

The new identity cards will be issued to citizens of the Republic of Moldova who have reached the age of 14. At the request of the legal representative, the document can also be issued before reaching the age of 14.

According to the Public Services Agency, in the first month of the project's launch, identity cards cannot be requested in an emergency regime. Citizens who need an identity card urgently will be issued temporary identity cards, which have the same legal value as a permanent document within the territory of the Republic of Moldova. The temporary identity document will be issued free of charge to citizens on the date of application.

Citizens holding a valid identity card are not required to obtain the new identity card. Identity cards remain valid until their expiration.

After the quantity of one million identity cards issued free of charge is exhausted, citizens will pay a fee of 290 MDL to issue the document within 20 working days.
