Three old agreements with CIS removed from Moldova's legislation

Parliament of the Republic of Moldova approved in the second reading the denunciation of three old agreements concluded with the member countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The draft laws were developed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Finance as part of the process of aligning national legislation and policies with European Union standards.

The first agreement denounced is the one regarding visa-free travel for CIS citizens, signed in Bishkek in 1992. According to the authorities, this measure follows the recommendations of the European Commission and aims to align visa policies with the EU's list of third countries requiring a visa. The change only affects travel to Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan since Moldova has concluded bilateral agreements with most CIS states.

The second denounced agreement regulated the principles of levying indirect taxes on the export and import of goods between CIS states, signed in Moscow in 1998.

The third agreement concerns measures to ensure the improvement of payments between economic organizations of CIS member states, signed in Tashkent in 1992.

Authorities explained that these agreements are outdated and no longer correspond to the current economic and political realities. So far, Moldova has denounced 67 agreements with the CIS as part of an ongoing process of modernizing the country's legislative and economic framework.
