ANRE: Proportion of emergency electricity in total monthly consumption about 0.2 percent

Moldelectrica purchased, during the current period of December 6-10, about 930 MWh of emergency energy from Romania's transmission and system operator, necessary to ensure the balancing of the national power system. The proportion of this quantity in total monthly consumption is approximately 0.2%. The data was presented today by the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE).

ANRE said "in the absence of exact data regarding the costs incurred by the operator, estimating the impact on final prices for consumers is premature and unfounded."

ANRE recommended market participants and end consumers to use electricity responsibly and efficiently, as well as to develop consumption and production schedules with utmost rigor, in order to avoid imbalances that may require recourse to such mechanisms.

Moreover, the Agency reiterates that emergency energy represents a strictly temporary safety tool, used exclusively in exceptional situations, and does not constitute a regular supply source.

On Friday night to Saturday, a large-scale Russian airstrike hit Ukraine's power grid, causing injuries and emergency power outages in multiple regions. In this context, the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Moldova, Dorin Junghietu, announced on Sunday, December 7, that Moldova's power system is operating under pressure, as the strikes damaged an important energy group in the region adjacent to Moldova, and the interconnection lines have reached near maximum load.

Due to the over-planned flow, the national operator Moldelectrica requested emergency assistance from Romania, a measure intended to stabilize the grid and avoid the risk of overloads.

Additionally, in the afternoon and evening of Monday, December 8, Moldelectrica was forced to request emergency electricity again. The request was driven by the imbalance in the power system due to limited capacity on the interconnection with Romania and deviations from the forecasted values of consumption and generation on the electricity market.
