Moldovan Wine promoted in Tokyo

The headquarters of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Tokyo hosted an event today promoting Moldovan wines, with the participation of Japanese media representatives.

Subsequently, one of the largest wine importers in Japan hosted another tasting event, attended by 60 distributors and wine enthusiasts interested in discovering Moldovan wines.

"For Moldovans, wine is about bringing people to the table, having conversations, and sharing emotions. The fact that the Japanese taste our wine with the same feelings shows us that, beyond the distance, we have things in common. It is a pride to be here in Tokyo and talk about Moldovan wines," said Ludmila Catlabuga, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry.

The Republic of Moldova has been exporting wine to Japan for over 10 years. The year 2024 is the best so far: 409,000 liters of wine were delivered to the Japanese market, compared to 209,000 liters in 2023 and 283,000 liters in 2022.

In 2024, the representation of the National Vine and Wine Office was inaugurated in Tokyo, a strategic decision to expand the presence of the Republic of Moldova on the Japanese market and to strengthen trade and cultural relations in the wine sector.

In the past five years, Japan, through JICA, has provided the Republic of Moldova with financial support amounting to approximately 42 million euros, in the form of grants and advantageous loans. These funds have been used for concrete projects such as: modern medical equipment for five hospitals in the country, contributing to the improvement of medical services quality; 19 vehicles for firefighters and rescue teams, helping to save lives in emergency situations; eco-friendly technology for farmers: over 1,000 farmers have been supported to adopt sustainable practices, including the installation of photovoltaic systems in 47 farms, with a total value of about 2.6 million euros; subsidies of around 2 million euros for the purchase of agricultural fertilizers, intended to support the productivity of local farms; equipping the National Library with modern equipment, allowing the digitization of cultural heritage and easier access to information.

The projects show the importance of the trust-based relationship developed over the years between the Republic of Moldova and Japan – a relationship that makes possible the generous support provided for the direct benefit of citizens.
