1 March Martisor day: People in solidarity with nature

On 1 March in the Republic of Moldova is marked the celebration of Marțișor (trinket). This day is closely linked to folk tradition, which harmoniously blends with modern trends. Every year, on 1 March, the International Music Festival Marchesor opens in Chisinau. The event brings together renowned artists. The tradition is respected by people of all ages, with children being the most concerned, as they make trinkets to give as gifts.

It marks the beginning of spring and is considered a symbol of good luck and renewal.

Experts underline the importance of the trinket as part of humanity's intangible cultural heritage, recognized by UNESCO, and urge people to value and promote the tradition.

"The trinket is a national value and is very important in our Romanian space. It marks the transition from cold winter to spring or even summer. It is a symbolic amulet through which people show solidarity with nature. It also symbolizes the beginning of a new agricultural year. It is present in all our cultural structures," ethnographer Varvara Buzilă said.

Celebrated for centuries, this custom has been handed down from generation to generation, preserving its charm and significance. The National Library of Moldova played a special role by hosting creative workshops for children. Guided by art teachers, the children learned various techniques for making trinkets.
