Moldovan deputy PM at Atlantic Council says leadership expects consolidation of partnership with USA in security, investments sectors

Moldova’s commitment to join the European Union and maintain a strategic partnership with the United States of America (USA) today was reaffirmed at the Atlantic Council. Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi participated in a public debate, during which he discussed Moldova's foreign policy priorities and appreciated the peace policy promoted by the Trump administration.

The Moldovan official highlighted the efforts made by the Chisinau authorities to achieve energy independence from Russian energy suppliers. In the context, he recalled the energy crisis caused by the Russian Federation in the Transnistrian region.

"The Moldovan society has stood firm and our citizens have sent a clear message: our people's legitimate aspiration is integration into the European Union," Popsoi emphasized.

The Moldovan Foreign Affairs Ministry appreciated the EU’s support worth 1.9 billion euros, pointing out that Moldova had been a testing ground for Russia's hybrid tactics.

"We managed to persuade our citizens that the direction set by President Sandu is the right one. Despite all challenges, Moldova has firmly stayed on the European path, which is possible also due to the support received on behalf of our partners," the deputy PM noted.

Mihai Popsoi highlighted the importance of the partnership with the United States, specifying that the American support had contributed to strengthening Moldova's resilience.

"The United States has helped us become a stronger partner and more anchored in the free world – as President Maia Sandu often says. We look forward to strengthening this partnership, especially in the fields of security and investments," Popsoi declared.

Minister Mihai Popsoi reaffirmed Moldova's firm support for Ukraine and appreciated the policy of "peace through strength," advocated by the Trump administration. He stressed that it was the only approach the Kremlin understands.

"We look forward to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, in the interest of the Ukrainian people – a brave people that has shown the world it can withstand not just three days, as some estimated at the war's onset, but more than three years," Popsoi added.

In conclusion, Mihai Popsoi thanked the American people for its support provided to Moldova and Ukraine.

"Any help for Moldova is help for Ukraine and any support for Ukraine is also support for Moldova. Moldova will remain alongside Ukraine. Moldova will remain alongside the United States," the official said.

The Atlantic Council is one of the most influential think tanks in the USA, operating in the field of international affairs, providing expertise and consultancy to representatives of the U.S. Administration and Congress, as well as the American business community.
