VIDEO // Mourning in Moldova

Writer Vladimir Beșleagă will be laid to rest on 28 February. Today is a day of mourning throughout the country in his memory. The funeral ceremony will take place at the National Palace. Vladimir Beșleagă will be buried at the central cemetery in Chișinău.

According to the Decree signed by President Maia Sandu, on this day, in all localities of the country, as well as in the diplomatic and consular missions of the Republic of Moldova abroad, the State Flag of the Republic of Moldova will be flown at half-mast. Public authorities, enterprises and organizations are advised to refrain from holding mass entertainment events, and media institutions are urged to consider the day's significance when editing publications and forming programs.

A moment of silence in memory of Maestro Vladimir Beșleagă will be held at 12:00. Subsequently, the funeral procession will move to the writer's resting place.

Vladimir Beșleagă, writer and former deputy, passed away at the age of 93, on the evening of February 25. He was a prominent figure in Romanian literature and culture, known for his significant contributions to promoting national values and the Romanian language in Bessarabia.

Born in 1931 in Mălăiești, Grigoriopol, Beșleagă graduated from Moldova State University in 1955, where he also did his PhD. 

In 1991, Beșleagă was awarded the title of People's Writer and was decorated with the Order of the Republic in 1996, an honor he refused.
