PHOTO // European Commissioner for Enlargement visits household in central Moldova district: cherry exports to EU open new opportunities for Moldovan farmers

European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos has visited the peasant household "Cojucaru" in the village of Slobozia-Dusca, a local business specialized in the production of fruits, including cherries.

According to the Delegation of the European Union to Moldova, the farm has recently started exporting cherries to the European Union market and is working with European partners to meet the standards and requirements for access to this market.

Representatives of the EU mission emphasize that such examples help strengthen the rural economy, by enhancing the competitiveness of local products, developing agricultural businesses and creating new jobs in communities.

“More competitive local products mean stronger businesses, jobs and more opportunities for rural communities,” the EU Delegation’s message reads.

The visit is part of the ongoing dialogue between Moldova and the European Union on supporting the agricultural sector and facilitating access for local producers to the European market.

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos is on an official visit to  Moldova, on the occasion of her participation in the EU–Moldova Investment Conference.

Marta Kos visited the Marta and Maria Monastery, an important spiritual and cultural landmark, where she discussed the values and heritage of Moldova.

She also took part in a discussion panel dedicated to environmental issues, held on the banks of the Dniester River, in the locality of Onitcani, during which topics related to the protection of water resources and cooperation in the environment field were addressed.
