An ultimate tribute to maestro Gheorghe Urschi was paid today, April 15, by the country’s leadership, together with all those who admired him, loved him, and valued his talent. President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu attended the funeral ceremony.

“We bid farewell to the one who knew how to turn life into a smile and truth into humor. Gheorghe Urschi leaves us, but he leaves behind a world that is warmer, more sincere and more humane. In the quiet of this day, we thank him for everything he has given us – for the humor that united us, for the thoughts that made us more aware, for the light he brought into our souls,” reads the message of Prime Minister Munteanu.

Gheorghe Urschi was an actor, director, playwright and screenwriter – one of the most beloved figures of the national culture. Born on January 18, 1948, in Cotiujenii Mari, Soldanesti district, Urschi graduated from the B. V. Shchukin Theatre School from Moscow. He was an actor at the Luceafarul Theatre of Chisinau, performing in many plays and directing hundreds of shows. The performance “The Will,” written and directed by Urschi, is still staged today to full houses. Gheorghe Urschi wrote books, film scripts and created numerous TV and radio programmes and concerts.

Maestro Urschi marked entire generations through the authenticity and subtlety of his humor, brought hope into people’s homes and in the 1990s, together with Maria Urschi, Gheorghe Parlea, Doina and Ion Aldea-Teodorovici, as well as Grigore Vieru, was on the front line of the National Revival Movement. He was honored with the highest distinctions: People’s Artist, Laureate of the National Prize, Knight of the Order of the Republic and Honorary Citizen of the Chisinau municipality.

The maestro passed away on April 13, 2026, at the age of 78. April 15 has been declared a National Day of Mourning.
