Moldovan President in dialogue with British MPs
President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu had a meeting today with British parliamentarians who are on a working visit to Chișinău. Discussions with Anneliese Dodds, a member of the Labour Party, and John Whittingdale, a member of the Conservative Party, focused on strengthening bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as well as on the continuous support provided to our country.
The United Kingdom is an essential partner for the Republic of Moldova, providing support in key areas such as: economy, security, combating corruption, strengthening democracy and supporting a free press. The recent liberalization of some Moldovan exports to the UK – including the removal of tariffs on agricultural products such as apples, plums and grapes – is an important step that helps local producers, opens new markets and supports the country's economy.
The President also highlighted the valuable contribution of the Moldovan community in the United Kingdom, which plays an active role in the economic development of both countries. A major topic of interest for Moldovan citizens settled in the UK is the mutual recognition of driving licenses – a measure in the process of being finalized, which will significantly facilitate their mobility and integration. The head of state voiced hope that the British Parliament will soon ratify a bilateral agreement in this regard.
The discussions also addressed the security situation in the region. Maia Sandu thanked the United Kingdom for the firm and consistent support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, emphasizing that Ukraine's resilience directly contributes to maintaining peace and security in the Republic of Moldova. The parties reaffirmed their joint commitment to a stable and peaceful Europe.
